Dr. Shanti Pepper

Shanti M. Pepper, Ph.D.

My professional practice aims to address the individual as a whole by incorporating effective treatments in combination with proven holistic interventions.

I am a psychologist trained and/or certified in the highest known caliber treatments for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, personality disorders, chronic pain, sleep disorders, and relationship problems. I am also a registered yoga teacher (RYT-500) and, when it fits my clients’ needs, I integrate mindfulness, gentle movement, and yoga.

I specialize in couples therapy and trauma recovery with adults (21 years old +). Since I have extensive experience in numerous effective treatments, we can take a personalized approach to your treatment with weekly therapy or “therapy intensives.” As a couples therapist, I primarily utilize Emotion Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) but may draw from other known effective treatments.  As a trauma specialist, your healing may occur through Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), or PE-PC (a brief exposure therapy). My expertise includes working with individuals who have experienced sexual assault, childhood trauma, intimate partner violence, traumas experienced as a Veteran, police officer, or EMT, workplace accidents/robberies, motor vehicle accidents, LGBTQ-related discrimination, and religious abuse.  Go to the Therapy Options page to read more!

About me.

I was born and raised in Colorado and currently live in Montana where I continue to be in awe of the mountain west. I enjoy almost all outdoor activities, live music, yoga, travel, and reading.

I am dedicated to promoting an environment of respect and appreciation for all individuals, regardless of race, tribe, color, ethnicity, religion/spirituality, sex, national origin, age, ancestry, physical/mental ability, status as a veteran or police officer, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and vaccination status. I work with individuals from all backgrounds and beliefs; I am committed to creating and maintaining an atmosphere of openness, trust, and safety where all attitudes, beliefs, values, and behaviors can be freely explored and discussed. I fully embrace providing high-quality and multiculturally sensitive services that affirm the dignity, worth, and value of all individuals.

Training

I received my Ph.D. in counseling psychology from The Pennsylvania State University after completing my pre-doctoral internship at the Vanderbilt-VA Consortium in Nashville, TN.

I completed a postdoctoral fellowship at The Ohio State University and then pursued specialized training as a PTSD postdoctoral fellow at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS). I served for eight years at CAVHS in the Outpatient PTSD Clinic, and five of those years I was the Military Sexual Trauma (MST) program coordinator for most of the state of Arkansas.

I then pursued a career as a staff psychologist and supervisor in Primary Care-Mental Health Integration (PCMHI) and Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP) at the Montana VA Healthcare System (MTVA).

My professional endeavors also include training and supervising psychology interns and postdoctoral fellows, teaching university classes, serving as subject matter expert in PTSD, general mental health, whole-health interventions, integrative behavioral health programming, and behavioral medicine.
